Introduction to SDGs/CE

Get inspired for your training session

INSPIRING GOOD PRACTICE 1 - The civilisation game

Website : http://www.level21.be
Territorial focus : Local, regional, national. EU

Level21 is a “games library” in Belgium that makes educational games and is borrowed from teachers and schools. The NGO offers further education, workshops and training on playful learning. Families, students, trainees and people in general can visit their facilities and play games during opening hours. A new project was started recently by the NGO in which they make a game case about the SDGs. The game is called the 'civilization game' and is already existing (beta version) even if the game is still unclear and not entirely tangible. The game is addressed to teacher, and educators in general, intended to be used for the classroom and which you can play in a few weeks. The aim of the game is to create a new 'civilization' on another planet. The students/trainees carry out assignments related to an SDG and earn a tile to build a city. By carrying out the assignments, they become aware of the problems in the world and the SDGs themselves.

INSPIRING GOOD PRACTICE 2 - SDG’s Belgium (An official national website on SDG’s in Belgium)

Website: http://www.sdgs.be
Territorial focus: Local, regional, national. EU

This website aims to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Belgium. Via this website actions and initiatives on the SDGs around all Belgian regions are promoted. This website collects qualitative information on the implementation of the SDGs in Belgium, so it’s a valuable source of ideas and initiatives. In this respect, the website contributes specially to SDG 12.8: "By 2030 ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature".

The Federal Institute for Sustainable Development (public institution) created this website recently in 2021. The institute itself was established in 2002 just after World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

The transferability of the idea should be simple, as we are talking about sustainable education and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature. The idea of gathering all initiatives as well as the achieved results regarding SDGs at national level on one specific and centralized website is easily transferable.

The website lists almost all the initiatives in Belgium including the training initiatives on SDGs. The website, instead of its added value as best practice to be transferred, is also a valuable source of training contents and ideas to the SUSTAINABLE project as well as a facilitating tool of meeting, sharing, and implementing projects and initiatives about SDGs.

It is very relevant as it is the kind of example that is useful at all the levels of sustainable education from the simple raising awareness of all stakeholders to a more complex learning from practice approach for educators and for people in general.

For achieving better results the Pedagogical principles used within this unit are: 1) digital storytelling; 2) active learning; 3) learning by doing.

Stories are powerful educational tools. They connect with learners on a personal level, alchemizing practical lessons with an emotional resonance, ensuring they will not be forgotten. Researchers have found that emotion has a significant link to both attention (how well students focus on the lesson at hand) and memory encoding and recall (how well they can recall those lessons later). Digital storytelling uses the tools of technology, such as video and audio production, interactive software and computer graphics, to create narrative stories that educate and build skills (source: https://online.se.edu/). Pairing these up with active learning which is "a method of learning in which students are actively or experientially involved in the learning process could give really positive results in learners skills/knowledge development.

1. Digital storytelling – understanding CE and creating the link to the relevant SDGs

The Real-world cases, role models presentation using digital story telling.
The Skill-Circle project applied innovative methods to mainstream and enhance understanding for “circular economy thinking”, through the use of digital storytelling and training materials along with the development of a new curricula. These were aimed to provide tailored solution for specific target groups - participants in vocational education and training, with special focus on those with lower educational level and with migrant/refugee background – by helping them to initiate new business opportunities as well as to create local jobs at all skills levels and opportunities for social integration.

The video about PURE OCEANS should be the base for this activity. PURE OCEANS is the company, established by a Danish couple who is devoted to contribute to the sustainable development through cleaning beaches by collecting washed out plastic and recycle them to produce phone cases and sunglasses.

2. Using WebQuests – focusing on CE and reflect on how these can underpin sustainability actions

WebQuests are used for engaging learners in obtaining a deeper knowledge of the subjects they are studying. With this type of active learning, which provides learners with a variety of sensory experience, students can explore real-world problems and challenges.

This methodology has been gaining adherents due to its flexibility in framing various  pedagogical strategies and adaptability to the most diverse contents, as well as the way in which it maximizes the use of the digital tools and environments available today. While engaged in the WebQuests, learners develop a variety of connections with the content and can form positive memories of learning. The fun or interesting moments tend to stand out in students’ memories and thus a positive emotional connection is considered to facilitate learning.
The T-challenge WebQuest platform presenting Circular economy related WebQuests should be used as resource.
