SDGs in Catering

Objectives of the module & Competences addressed

Sustainability and the SDGs affect all living things and aspects of life there for every sector, business, job, individual, etc. is affected and can have effect on sustainability. The objective of this module is to introduce the SDGs into catering sector and catering education to raise awareness and to highlight ways of thinking and working in a more sustainable way.
It is vital that the trainer/teacher is well prepared and understands the concept of sustainability and the key areas where food sustainability is risking future generations the possibilities to enjoy the earths as previous generations have.
Bringing handouts or visuals for the learners can help engage them in the “SDGs in catering” class and connecting the topic to personal experiences or hyped trends helps learners understand the topic. Examples of these can be how we tend to like ice-creams on hot summer days, have you thought about the energy efficiency of kiosks freezers? What about the hyped trend of avocado toast, do the learners know where avocados are cultivated and when they are in season?
Once the learners understand how the food we eat can affect the earths health and how the value chain works its time to educate them on ways to be more sustainable in cooking and serving food. The module works well for homes, cafeterias, restaurants and caterers.
Use the initial minutes of each class to educate about sustainability and the topics of the lesson, use short videos, handouts or presentations to engage learners and allow for some time for questions and discussions in each class.

The training activities used within this Module will enhance learners' competences to:
